Otter Prize Giving 2014

The Otter End of Season Prize giving on Saturday was a sell-out - a waiting list too, (first time in ten years) as 120 Otters and their parents squeezed into the dining room to celebrate what has been a great season both on and off the water.

Cadet World Championships - Weymouth 2014

With barely time to draw breath after a windy Nationals, three of our teams entered the Promotional Regatta run alongside the World Championships in Weymouth from 15th to 22nd August. After the sometimes brutal conditions of the Nationals, Scarlett & Amy in Scallywag, Ben & Josh in Whatever and Joe this time crewed by Freddie Pitcher in Pure Genius were glad to see the forecast was something less than survival conditions.

Otters at the Cadet Nationals

August was a busy month for the Otter Cadets. After a great Otter Week four crews travelled to Weymouth for a fortnight of great sailing and socialising as only the Cadets can do. The National Championships began on the 9th in near perfect sailing conditions and our four crews of Scarlett Anderson & Amy Shepherd, Joe Barr & Jamie Rashbrook, Ben Barr & Josh Bennett in the Gold-Silver fleet and Dom Moon & Felix Wallace in the Bronze fleet left the Harbour along with 84 other teams full of anticipation for what lay ahead.

Otter Week 2014

The Otter Commodore's report has been added...
The Otter Commodore hosted the first Commodore's Reception at the Otter Shed to welcome all the entrants and their parents as well as our visitors from the Alster Piraten Yacht Club in Hamburg. We have a long association with this club - in fact the Otters were modelled on the Piraten after Tiny Mitchell admired their organisation in the 1930s.

Otter Drone Video

If you have been intrigued by the aerial videos of Otter Week you might like to know a little bit more about them. They were made using a DJI Phantom Vision quad copter with a camera. Igor had to modify it by adding a gimbal to make the footage more stable and independent of the drone's sharp movements.

IOCA Protest Meeting

Most sailing event organisers hear the news that there are protests to be heard with a sinking feeling, especially if the outcome of the protest hearing is likely to be a change in the overall results. This was the news that greeted Jason Phelps, organising the IOCA Eastern Area Championships over the weekend of 12/13 July. However, once he had enlisted the help of Nigel Cole, all that changed...

IOCA Eastern Area Optimist Championships 2014

The Royal Corinthian Otters hosted the championship at Burnham this year, assisted by the Burnham Sailing Club. Zac and the 2014 RYA RIB Championship

Back in the beginning of the year, Mike Bikhazi reported that the Otters were considering entering the RYA RIB Driving Championship in the 13-16 age group. The competition takes the form of a time trial around a set of marks - the fastest time wins. Skill and control and not necessarily speed are the most important factors. The winner of the Local Heat can progress into the Eastern Regional Heat and the winner of the Regional Heat can then progress to the National Final.

Otters at the Feva Nationals

A number of our Otters travelled to Weymouth to take part in the RS Feva Nationals. Over 100 boats took part in the four day event, including boats from the Netherlands, Lithuania and Canada. Sunshine and 20 knots. Sounds perfect!

2014 Otter Easter Regatta

There were over 30 boats racing, mostly Otters with some visitors, for the four-race Regatta. There were some great personal performances in the all-round blustery conditions with many completing all four races, despite a few dips in the cold water!

The Otters are Fundraising...

The Otters need to replace one of their RIBs and have hit upon a healthy way to raise funds - The Big Otter Slim. Carl Anderson, Marc Ellis, Steve Rands and Justin Waples have already made a start and are trying both to lose some weight as well as raise funds for a new Otter Spotter. The day of reckoning is Friday, May 9th, when there will be an official 'weigh-in' at the Otter Race Night.
