Burnham branch opens
By the end of the 1880's, the appeal of the sailing at Erith was waning. The gardens near the Clubhouse made way for a coal wharf, the river was increasingly polluted and vessels waiting to dock upriver crowded the tideway. But the real limitation was the Club 'circular course', perhaps better described as a 'boomerang'…
Club composed entirely of amateur yachtsmen formed
Letters in The Field invited "energetic gentlemen" who might be interested in the creation of a Yacht Club, to be composed entirely of amateur yachtsmen, to meet at the Pier Hotel. The Corinthian Yacht Club was founded on the 28th May 1872 with the sole object of encouraging Amateur Yacht Sailing.
First Clubhouse opened at Erith on the River Thames
Despite the fact that the membership of the Corinthian Yacht Club grew rapidly in the first five months of its existence from 130 Members at the end of its first month, June 1872, to a reported 249 at the first General Meeting in November, the Club functioned without its own premises, hiring rooms for necessary functions.
On the Move: Port Victoria
The members of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club were united in their decision to abandon the Erith Clubhouse which had been their base since shortly after the founding of the Club in 1872. There was, however, discussion and dissent concerning the location for the next clubhouse.
