Letters in The Field invited 'energetic gentlemen' who might be interested in the creation of a Yacht Club, to be composed entirely of amateur yachtsmen, to meet at the Pier Hotel. The Corinthian Yacht Club was founded on the 28th May 1872 with the sole object of encouraging Amateur Yacht Sailing.
Membership reached 130 after one month, the first match was sailed on July 1st followed by 'a capital dinner at the Pier Hotel', and thirty members dined at the Cannon Street Hotel before attending the first General Meeting.
