RCYC Christmas Fiesta

Saturday 15th December 2007

The Squibs fielded a magnificent team"Come to the Fiesta!" blared the posters, sprouting odd-looking cactuses, (or cacti?) so the members turned up for their Mexican Cocktails, Nachos and Gaspacho. The dress code was sombreros, ponchos, boleros and moustachios, of course.

The Cruisers like a good lunch!

September & October 2007

It wasn't racing weather but...Ever since the David Eagling Memorial Trophy was instigated in 1995 it has been traditional to sail and struggle with a quiz. We haven't missed a year which is really remarkable. But not this year. Our first attempt to race on September 30th was abandoned through lack of wind.

It's more than 90m!Way back in June we reported on Sara Campbell's success in the sport of Freediving. She described her dives as 'comfortable' and reckoned to be able to improve on her performance. Well, she's done just that!

It's good to hold you!Day One
All talk of a light wind Endeavour Trophy went out the window this morning as competitors arrived in Burnham to find a gradually increasing easterly breeze. Unfortunately two of the 30 confirmed entries did not turn up, leaving 28 competitors out on the water.

Steve TylecoteBURNHAM CROWNS A NEW CHAMPION!
Steve Tylecote and Toby Lewis, representing the Firefly fleet, sailed a fantastic series to claim the Holt sponsored Endeavour Trophy 2007. Displacing Nick Craig from his three year winning streak, Steve was clearly delighted with the achievement. He celebrated with a huge cheer as they crossed the final finish line, and elaborated afterwards, "It's very emotional - we're really chuffed!"

RBYC wins the St Mathew Cup

Up Spinnakers!Congratulations to the Royal Burnham Yacht Club for their commanding win in the St Mathew Cup, sailed on Sunday 2nd September.This was the 61st occasion when the four Burnham Clubs competed for this trophy.

Mingming's Northern Voyage 2007

4th August 2007

Heavy weather in the North SeaMingming is safely returned to harbour after 37.5 days at sea. She dropped anchor in Cawsand Bay, Plymouth Sound on the 29th July, having left Burnham on 22nd June. The voyage was not without incident!

Hat Trick for Baby Beluga!

Hands on the Trophy!The 707s completed the series of races for the Phantom Trophy on the 21st July. It's an innovative series, designed to stretch the abilities of those entering. However, John Lewis' team on Baby Beluga seem to have worked it all out as they were victorious for the third year running!

Justin at the ff Worlds

3rd to the 16th June 2007

Justin at the ff  WorldsJustin Waples competed in the recent flying fifteen World Championships in Majorca. Together with his crew, Iain Stowe, they managed a final place of ninth which made them the fourth best British boat. 71 boats from 10 countries travelled to the Championships from as far afield as New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Mingming goes North

Mingming goes NorthRoger Taylor, sailing his junk-rigged Corribee, left Burnham on Friday 22nd June with the intention of reaching the Arctic Circle. After his experiences in the Jester Challenge last summer, he has made some modifications in Mingming but as they do not include modern communications technology, we get no news until he returns!

Ex-Otter Sara breaks Freediving Records

June 2007

Sara smiles after success...Few of us have ever heard of Freediving but Sara Campbell now holds the three records in the Sport for British women. There are three separate disciplines:Constant Weight No Fins which involves swimming breaststroke vertically down, Constant Weight which allows the use of a monofin so that swimming like a dolphin becomes possible and Free Immersion in which the divers can pull themselves down on a rope until the pressure allows them to sink further. All by taking just one breath of air on the surface!

Campbell wins and gets plastered!

We three...Literally!
Rob Campbell received the East Coast Silver Salver 2007 for his winning performance in the East Coast Dragon Championships on the Bank Holiday Monday and a plaster cast on his right forearm on the Tuesday, having sustained an injury in the last race.

RCOD Regatta

26th, 27th & 28th May 2007

A perfectly set spinnakerThe Royal Corinthian One Design Class, joined by some Royal Burnham One Design friends, enjoyed mixed weather in their recent regatta; some sunshine, some driving rain, and winds both fair and foul. The overall winner was Bob Melville in Corinna, with Ken Bushelll in 2nd place in Cormorant and John Heathfield, Corpo Santo in 3rd. Steve and Jo Adams in Quartz took first place for the RBODs.

The Cruisers Slip Their Moorings

Ella Rose dressed in her best...The cruisers got off to their usual late start with our first cruise of the year all the way to Brandy Hole Yacht Club , who once again made us very welcome and provided an excellent lunch. Five boats sailed most of the way up there and four sailed back, the Cruiser Captain, being a gentleman, refused to sail to windward which had nothing to do with his new sails that only went on at five thirty that morning!

Maximus wins the Squib Gold Cup

5th, 6th and 7th May 2007

A clean startLocal boats clearly demonstrated that they have benefited from the early season training delivered by our own Paul Manning and Squib technical guru, Tony Saltonstall. Malcolm Hutchins and Sarah Hastwell, Lady Penelope, led the fleet into the final race of the six race series and might have had the series sown up if not for a spinnaker failure in the last race of Sunday.

NRV Dragons challenge RCYC

11th, 12th & 13th May 2007

Phoebe took the fleet upriverThe weekend of 12th and 13th May saw the arrival of familiar faces from the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) for the annual team race in Dragons against the RCYC. A visiting youth team from the Alster Piraten were also in attendance for what is hoped to be an annual team race with the Corinthian Otters.

Baby Beluga - East Coast Champion

8th May 2007

The New Champions....The 707 East Coast Championships held over the weekend of 5th to 7th May attracted eleven entries for the six race series, all local boats except Stuart Howells' Miss Moneypenny from the River Orwell. A consistent performance over the six race series by John Lewis and his crew in Baby Beluga was the secret of their success...

Dragon Easter Trophy

6th to 9th April 2007

Gently, gently...Twenty-one boats, including six visitors, competed on the River Crouch for the Dragon Easter Trophy. The event was sponsored by Bolle, Musto, Lonton & Gray, Mailspeed, Rice & Cole and Forrester Hyde.

Keelboat, Dinghy & Cruiser Safety Event

The Burnham RNLI TeamSome 50 members attended the Club Safety Day held on 10th March 2007, organised by Rear Commodore Tim Matthews and his wife Sarah. The afternoon commenced with a presentation by the Commodore to the RNLI of a cheque for £120 on behalf of Rob Mackay who had held a boat boot sale. Many thanks!
