Squib 40th Anniversary Regatta...
| |
With fleets based at over 30 locations the National Squib Class is one of the most successful one-design classes in the UK. The Class was granted National Status by the Royal Yachting Association in 1972 and to this day remains the only keelboat class to enjoy this title. With boats still being built and close to 100 boats regularly competing at the National Championships it is by far one of the most successful classes sailing in the UK.
The Squib was designed by Burnham-on-Crouch based designer Oliver Lee and was first launched on the River Crouch in 1968. The first National Championship for the class was held in Burnham in 1972 so it is more than fitting for the National fleet to return to Burnham in 2008 to celebrate its Fortieth Anniversary. In June 2008 the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, which is home to the oldest and largest Squib fleet in the country, is hosting a six-day regatta to celebrate the event. To date entries have been received from 21 of the UK and Irish fleets including seven National Champions.
The event will be sailed on Olympic style courses at Shore Ends. The Endeavour Trophy Race Officer Kim Allen will be officiating. The number of entries is restricted to 65 Boats. See the Notice of Race on the RCYC web site for more details.
The event is being sponsored by Parker Boats, Holt, Super Spars, White Marine Services, Bannerman, Rendell, Lonton and Gray, Mailspeed Marine, Colman Coyle, Salty, The Franklin Group, Hickory Docks, Hyde Sails, The Anglian Group, The RYA, Geaves, Farmers Ales and others.
It is planned to make the event the biggest party the Squib fleet has ever seen. A local brewer is even brewing a one-off beer to mark the anniversary! Free drinks, parties and live jazz etc. will follow each daily prize giving. On the Tuesday, to celebrate its 40th birthday, the Burnham Squib Fleet will be hosting its own Pimm’s party at the RCYC, A fabulous, inexpensive selection of food has been arranged for each day with all tastes catered for.
The event will culminate in a grand Black Tie/1968 style gala dinner at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. The dinner will include a raffle between the competitors. The prize will be a brand new Parker Yachts race prepared National Squib One Design. In memory of and in tribute to Oliver Lee, the boat will be called ‘By the Lee’. If you want to enter the event and join the party, enter now. You will find details of how to enter and the Notice of Race on the RCYC Web site.
