There were 22 Squibs including 3 visitors from Stone, Tollesbury and Waldringfield participating in the Squib Gold Cup which is a recognised national event for the class. The event was won by Malcolm Hutchings and Andy Ramsey in Lady Penelope in a show of consistency which was missing from the other contenders including national champion Nigel Grogan with Ian Keely in Helmut Shoing whose challenge spun away on the final race of series leaving them in 2nd overall.
The series was reduced from 8 to 5 races due to the lack of wind on Saturday and the excess on Sunday. It was a credit to PRO Edwin Buckley and Team Phoebe that even 5 races were achieved in the conditions. In fact, 5 boats only achieved the first race and retired through boredom or dehydration. Silver fleet was closely contested between Mark and Ian Knights in Quidsin, Jason Phelps with Carl Anderson in Magic Roundabout and visitors Ray and Deb Apthorp in Nemesis. The superior foul tide beats and mark rounding helped the Knights boys secure the victory. There were some great performances across the fleet and it all looks promising for the East Coast championships at the end of the month.
