Ten boats raced for the 3rd RCYC RS200 Open Meeting. The event is part of the Great Eastern series and Burnham hosted a double whammy weekend alongside the BSC Asymmetric open on Saturday which was won by Will Taylor. So local hopes were high with just One visitor, last year’s defending champions David Jessop and Sophie Mear.
The Burnham fleet got off to a great start with Will and Matt Taylor taking race 1, and our own Ben and James Hutton-Penman race 2 - then disaster struck, firstly tiller failure and then a lunch break collision which took out both of the leaders. In both races Chay Taylor sailing with Dylan Collingbourne and the defending Champions David & Sophie had shared 2nd and 3rd spots, so after race 3 when David and Sophie took the honours, Chay and Dylan required a bullet in the last race to take the trophy.
The early lead taken by David and Sophie in the final race led to some high speed gambling by Chay and Dylan, but low and slow out of the tide seemed to be paying.
David and Sophie finished comfortably first, to retain the trophy, followed by Jamie and Ollie Mears 2nd, and Carl and Scarlett Anderson 3rd.
2017 RCYC RS200 Open Meeting Overall
- 1st - David Jessop and Sophie Mear
- 2nd - Chay Taylor and Dylan Collingbourne
- 3rd - Jamie Mears and Ollie Mears
It was good to see the local fleet has grown again with several new boats out, I believe the Burnham fleet is now fast approaching the teens.
Finally a big thanks to race officer Edwin Buckley, Team Pheobe, the mark-layers and safety crews for a great event well executed.
